Library Information

Discovery College library endeavours to support the students and staff in their pursuit of quality information and leisure reading material. As our school grows, so does our collection and access to information.

The library is staffed by Mrs McKenzie, Head of Library and MYP Teacher Librarian, Mrs Leanne Sercombe PYP teacher librarian, with three library assistants Annie Yeung, Connie Leung and Michele Cheng.

Library opening hours are: 8.00am - 4.30pm on Monday to Thursday and 8am - 3:45pm on Firday. Students are able to access the library and borrow books before school, during lunch and after school, as well with their classes in class time.

There are a number of different resources arranged in the library to cater for the different age groups we have in the school. More details of the arrangement can be found on the Policies page.

Parents are welcome to register to borrow from the library, and will be issued with their own library card after completing a registration form. Parents are asked to come before 8.30am and after 3.00pm to reduce disruption to the students needs.

Donations of books and other resources are welcome. Please understand that we are selective in what we accept for the collection to maintain a high standard of resources. If you wish to donate, we will take everything, but some donations may be donated to a third party if we can't use them. Please see our Policies page for the selection criteria.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books

The BoB progamme was started in Hong Kong in 2001 by Bryant McIntyre, a Teacher Librarian from the USA. The BoB model is based on the original concept formed in Noth Carolina, USA. It is essentially a literature quiz based on a set number of books.

There are two categories of the reading programe: Primary School, which involves years 5 & 6; and Middle school, which involves years 7 & 8. In each category the students are asked to read from a list of 20 books.

In May, a number of schools in HK battle it out according to regions and a day of rounds. The winners of the rounds move into the "BoB Grand Final" where two schools in each category battle it out.

This year, Discovery College would like to field two teams from each category, and BoB will be offered as an CCA in term two and three. Mrs McKenzie and Mr Hudson will co-ordinate the teams.

Policies

Student Access Policy

The library is central to implementing, enriching and supporting the teaching and learning program of the college.

The library is staffed by a PYP and a MYP Teacher Librarian, 3 fulltime Library assistants plus student volunteers. It is a gateway to access information in a number of forms - books, magazines, newspapers, sound and video recordings, websites as well as online databases and resources.

The library is open to students before school, lunch time, after school and during class time. Each primary class has a scheduled borrowing time during the week. Secondary students are able to borrow when they have the need and opportunity. Students in years 1-3 need to bring their library bag to borrow resources, and students from year 4 need to use their smart card to borrow.

Each year level has different borrowing allowances:

  • Year 1 - 3 resources
  • Year 2 - 4 resources
  • Year 3 - 5 resources
  • Year 4 - 6 resources
  • Year 5 - 7 resources
  • Year 6 - 8 resources
  • Secondary Students - 10 resources.

Different resources also have different borrowing time allowances: Books - 4 days, DVD and Playaways - 7 days, Magazines - 3 days. All can be renewed twice.

Students are only able to borrow one DVD or Playaway at a time.

Students who have overdue resources are unable to borrow until they have cleared their accounts. Lost resources need to be paid for with a $50 per resource administration fee.

The school library website has a number of links to resources than can be accessed 24/7. These include the library catalogue, Encylopedia Brittanica, Brain Pop, Infotrac, SCMP, The Wall Street Journal, New Scientist, Make magazine plus a Netbvibes site with 100’s of links to support the school curriculum. These can be accessed by curriculum > library > resources and links. The password can be requested by parents, students will know what it is.

The Discovery College Library also has a Facebook fan page where items of literary nature are posted along with latest happenings in the library.

Parents are welcome to join the library as borrowers, please see one of the Library Assistants for information. Parents are also welcome to help in the library, again, please contact us to organise.

The School Library is catering to a wide range of readers and age levels, we have implemented a secondary fiction section to separate reading material that may be controversial or innapropriate for younger students. These resources can only be borrowed by year 7 and above unless written permission is granted by parents.

The library is proactive in developing information literate students and supporting an information literate community. The teacher librarians work collaboratively with the teachers at the school as experts in the field of information literacy to ensure that students not only know how to find the information they are needing, but to know what to do with it once they have it.

The library has a policy document covering collection development, donations, challenged materials, and censorship. If you would like to read the full document please contact the Head of Library.
