MYP Yr 1 | English A and Humanities | Course Overview

The Year 7 English and Humanities programme aims to enrich students’ understanding of the world in which they live while developing their communication and thinking skills.  Through inquiries into culture, history, the global food economy and the environment, students will be encouraged to share their understanding through discussion and a range of written and visual responses.   At Year 7 students will develop their ability to plan, draft and edit their writing with a particular emphasis on shaping their work according to purpose.  Students will be guided through the research process and gain valuable skills so as to develop their confidence and independence with finding, selecting and making meaning of information.  In order to develop critical literacy skills and broaden their academic vocabulary, students will engage with a broad range of fiction and non-fiction texts from various literary and non-literary genres.  Weekly literature and current events programmes are in place to ensure that students gain a greater awareness of contemporary issues and ways in which language is used to express and explore human experience.

A Poem by Michael Lavergne, 7MCR

Mexico, my Mexico

I miss your grassy plains
And the temples which once stood brave.
I miss the horses and the pigs
And all the mountains
With your music and laughter
While the children play.
I will return to you Mexico.

My child there is no rush.
The temples are still brave
And our land is filled with music
While the children play.
So enjoy life – every bit of it
Have fun with your friends
For I will always be here for you,
My little friend.

Making a difference

Year 7 made a positive difference to the DB environment last Friday when they undertook a beach clean up in conjunction with DB Greens.  They arrived to the beach behind the North Plaza with some horror and disgust, finding it littered with construction waste and plastic debris.  Students were shocked at the amount of rubbish and it helped them to grasp the reality and severity of water pollution through beach debris. Inspired by DB Greens’ message, the Year 7 worked tirelessly filling many black bags with littered rubbish. They arrived feeling horrified but could leave feeling proud of themselves and reassured that the contribution of every individual can make a difference to positively impact not only our local but also our global environment.
